The UnStuffy Headshot, Explained

The UnStuffy Headshot session is different. Not in the Midwest “that’s diff’rent” kind of way, but in a “Hot Dog! I totally look like me and it’s man, I’m awesome” kinda way.

I started offering UnStuffy Headshots because I was tired of seeing the same stiff, overly polished headshots. You know the type. Technically fine, but absolutely forgettable. I wanted to create portraits that felt like the person I was photographing. Portraits with warmth, personality, and that spark that says, “Yep, this human is amazing.”

The UnStuffy Headshot session isn’t about performing for the camera. It’s about being present. And while I’ll guide you the whole way, the good stuff happens when you show up ready to be part of the process.

If you’ve looked at UnStuffy Headshots and thought, “They just look like themselves,” that’s exactly the goal. But those photos don’t just happen. They come from the energy you bring in with you, so if you’re wondering how to get that kind of photo, the one that actually feels like you, here’s how to prepare. Not just your outfit, but your energy too.

First off, what the heck is an UnStuffy Headshot, and why is it awesome?

Unstuffy Headshots are my antidote to stiff, overly polished headshots. These sessions are about capturing the version of you that your friends, coworkers, and clients actually recognize. The one who laughs easily, makes great eye contact, and doesn’t look like they’re posing for their passport photo.

This is a session that meets you where you're at. Whether you're bold and playful or quiet and calm, I’ll work with you to create something real and relaxed. It’s a collaborative process, not a one-size-fits-all formula. We’ll follow your lead, play a little, and build images that reflect you, just the way you are.

Just say no to fake smiles, rehearsed poses, and weird energy

Some people walk in with a smile they practiced in the mirror. I get it. Having your photo taken can feel awkward. But the truth is, the best images come when you stop trying to control how you think you're supposed to look.

I’ll keep things conversational and light so your reactions are natural and honest. If something feels off, we shift. You don’t have to perform. You just have to show up and let me guide the rest.

Be present. Be open.

We’re not aiming for perfect, here. It’s all about staying curious. Maybe we try a few different expressions, angles, or backgrounds. Maybe we laugh at something unexpected. Some of the best images happen in the in-between moments we didn’t plan.

So don’t worry about nailing it. Come ready to explore a little. I’ll be right there with you.

Rock that outfit that feels like your best self

Wear something that feels like you. Skip the outfit you think you're supposed to wear for a headshot and go with the one that makes you stand taller or relax a little deeper into your chair. If you’re uncomfortable in your clothes, it shows.

Pick something you love and feel good in. Brights are great. Neutrals are great. Layers, texture, and accessories are all welcome. If you’re on the fence, bring a couple of options and we’ll figure it out together.

What to expect when we work together

No two sessions are exactly the same, and that’s on purpose. Some people want to talk through everything—colors, ideas, energy. Others want to show up and let me guide. I’m here for both.

If you have ideas, bring them. If you have favorite colors or want your photos to feel a certain way, tell me. Do you want your images to feel calm and grounded? Bold and bright? Warm and easygoing? That kind of direction helps me shape the session in a way that matches your vision.

And if you’re not sure? We’ll figure it out together. I’ll offer ideas, shift things as we go, and help you settle into a space that feels right. We might stay in one setup or move through a few. There’s no script. We follow what feels good.

My goal is never just a technically nice photo. I want your images to reflect something true.

A Few Questions to Get Us Started

Before your session, I’ll send you a quick questionnaire. It’s not long or formal. It just helps me get a feel for who you are and what you want. You can write a lot or a little. Either way, it gives me a better starting point.

I’ll ask things like:

  • What kind of energy you want your headshot to give off

  • How you want people to feel when they see it

  • What colors or looks you love

  • If there’s anything that helps you feel more at ease

  • And whether you’re planning to use the image on a website, LinkedIn, or something else

This also gives you a chance to reflect a bit on how you want to be seen. Not just as a professional, but as a person.

These sessions are about showing up as yourself and letting that be enough. Not the résumé version of you. Not the overthinking version. Just the version that’s already there, when you feel like you're in the right place.

Show up curious. Be open. Trust the process. I’ll take care of the rest.

If you’re ready to book or want to talk through any ideas, just reach out. I’d love to work with you.
