Mum’s Day

“Mum, I love you,” my 3-year-old daughter says sweetly, touching my face gently like I often touch hers. When I was pregnant with her during mother’s day four years ago, I couldn’t have known how this little thing growing inside of me could change my life. Sure, I knew I would love her – mom’s love their kids. But she’s also made me into a better person: confident, patient, focused and more empathetic. I love my kiddo to pieces, and I’m so happy I’m a mother.

I’m going into this weekend with a mission: to be photographed with my daughter and with my mum. Crazy as it may seem, I don’t have a lot of photos with either of these awesome ladies. Call it a photographer’s curse – one that’s easily remedied with a click of the shutter. It has made me happy, however, that I get to photograph so many awesome mum’s with their children.

Happy Mother’s Day weekend to all the bodacious mums I know!

Welcome Colin!

I was so excited to photograph wee Colin last November. After watching his parent’s journey towards adoption throughout 2012, his arrival was an exciting one. And as we tip-toe towards the 6 month mark, this little family will soon be “official” in the eyes of the government. But, it’s quite obvious it was love at first sight for everyone involved. They were a family the moment he was born.

2012 Winnipeg Folk Festival

Do you know how when you put off doing something for a really, really long time to the point where you totally forget to do it, and then something in the universe wakes you up and screams “YOU BETTER DO THAT THING!”, and then you do that thing. Yes. That just happened to me 1/2 hour ago. Awesome, I know.

I’m not sure if it’s the return of crummy, cold weather or the fact that I’ve seen a bit of Winnipeg Folk Festival buzz on facebook this week, but something in this universe reminded me to edit the photographs I took during the festival last July. Normally, I’m pretty prompt at editing vacation photos (mostly because I know this would happen) but last year was a doozy, and frankly, I had no time.

I won’t go into why the folk festival is awesome. Sure, I totally could be their Minnesota PR rep… but, I think I’ve laid out my case year after year (after year). I’ll just say that 2012 was a totally different experience. Not only was my daughter starting to participate more in the festival but we’ve started camping with some pretty awesome fellow Minnesotans who we met in 2011. I already can’t wait for this July. I’ve got a countown. I’m not kidding. 69 days.

PS: We all look this tired/grimey/happy the last day of folk fest. It’s a bittersweet last day.

In Stages: Amy

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a year since I first met beautiful Amy and her sweet-beau Doug. In the winter of 2012, Amy’s good friend Amanda (who also happens to be a classmate of mine from high school… go Vikings!) asked me if I’d like to photograph her best, best friend Amy during the stages of pregnancy. Amanda had seen the work I had done with my niece Alicia, and LOVED the idea of a pregnancy being documented during it’s various stages. I leapt on the chance to photograph Amy. I had been knocking around the idea of offering a pregnancy-stages photo package, and photographing a non-relative was the perfect opportunity to see if it was something I’d like to offer.

So, we set up a plan. I would photograph her during the three seasons of her pregnancy: spring, summer and autumn. And, as it turned out, we also ended up scheduling the sessions at the three large colleges/universities in Fargo-Moorhead: Concordia, MSUM and NDSU. A trifecta of awesomeness.

It was so much fun to get to know Amy and Doug and to finally meet their wee baby Vincent in November. What a beautiful little family.

Class of 2013: Zach (Round Two)

Well, we’ve come to the end… the end of the 2013 graduate posts. It’s been a wild ride, and I thought there would be no better way to close this week then with some portraits of my very own nephew, Zach. Why? Because Zach is awesome, that’s why.

As you may recall, Zach and I had a super mini session last summer. While passing through Fargo on his way back to Minot last month, we finished up his session in the studio. I’m a fan of all my grads, but especially Zach. This is why:

Class of 2013: Elex

Elex is a patient guy. While all his buddies had scrambled to get their graduate photos done by autumn 2012, Elex knew what look he wanted for his photos. He… wanted… snow.

If you recall, it was well into early 2013 before we even received a good amount of the fluffy stuff. So, patient Elex waited and waited for his snowy opportunity. Finally, on a very, very snowy day in mid-Feb, Elex’s patience paid off. It was time for his grad photos.

Being that it was a crazy, snowy day, we took some portraits in the studio as well. Elex is such an awesome, laid-back, young dude.

Class of 2013: Rachel

It’s not often that I get to photograph graduates after the new year, but late in 2012 I received a message from this gorgeous grads mum hoping to get her daughter in for a studio session in January. It just so happened that I was finally opening my studio around that time and so the session was made and Rachel became one of the first sessions in the new studio. Falling in line with all my grads, Rachel is kind, cute and smart-as-as-a-whip. She’s also pretty comfy in front of the camera which made photographing her an absolute joy.
