Step into my office, baby.

For my entire photography career, I’ve worked at a studio with a physical location and set business hours. So it was no surprise that the biggest question I’ve been asked since launching my own business is where my studio will be located. Trust me, this question has gone through my head a million times. After all, can I really be a professional photographer and not have a store front?

The answer, my friends, is yes.

After much thought, I’ve decided that, for now, I’m going to forego finding a a physical space and start my business right from home. I want to make sure to grow my business at a responsible rate so that I can invest in the things that will make help me tell the best stories possible and allow me to treat my clients with the utmost care. And while I hope someday to open a beautiful, downtown studio space, for now I’m making the best of what I have.

It was really important to me to develop a super awesome space to work from home.  So, after much obsessing and a whole lot of Pinteresting, I’ve developed my dream home office. I’m so excited to step into this room every single day and I have a feeling some great things will happen in this tiny space. So, without further ado, I share with you my office:

Here’s a wide view of my office space. Don’t you just love my desk? It was my very own (sorta) IKEA hack. The desk top are three VIKA AMON small desk tops, each bracketed together with straight brackets from Ace Hardware.  The desktop is supported by VIKA CURRY legs on the end, and in the middle are two VIKA ALEX drawer units separated by a VIKA ALEX storage unit (perfect size for my camera gear). With the loads of IKEA storage boxes I now have, there is more than enough space to grow my business from home.

(LEFT) My classy beverage holders contain a couple of my favorite things – coffee and water. The BRITTA mug, a gift from my husband, is the official coffee mug of Britta the Photographer. The deceptive “Lens” mug, a gift from an awesome client, is my water glass. (RIGHT) A little sign I made myself to assure I stay on task.

Believe it or not, I made these roman shades! Check out the tutorial on the 365 Days to Simplicity blog.

The “packaging” station.

A found this little gem at a thrift store. It’s a perfect place to hold my cute little business cards.

Since I’ll be working from home, my darling daughter will be able to stay home too. I wanted to make sure to create a great space for her to “work” while I’m working.

So, there you have it, my home office. I’m so excited to start working here full time!

Katie - Britta, I am so excited for you to begin this journey!

Jenny Patterson - Great studio! My only suggestion, it’s TOO clean!! HA you should see mine these days!

Britta - It’s a fresh space. Give it a few months. I hate to see what it looks like the middle of wedding season ;)

Amanda - Wow, I LOVE your space! I’m currently trying to revamp my office area, and this is just so stinking perfect, right down to the kidlet work area. Now just to convince my video game artist husband that aqua is an acceptable color for our shared space…

Amanda - Sorry to be a huge pain, but… I was wondering if you remember what your paint color was called? I’ve nearly convinced the hubs to let me go color-crazy, but I’m hesitant. I tried aqua once in a bathroom and it just ended up looking like the inside of a porta-potty. I’m under strict instruction to do my homework this time and get the exact name so as to prevent another paint-then-repaint type situation…
